Objective of the Centre

Broad objectives of CMS

The main aim of the Centre is to create an international centre of excellence covering all aspects of mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics, computer and information sciences. Apart from carrying out fundamental research, other aims of the Centre are the following:

  • To assemble a collection of a dozen excellent researchers who will be willing to take up any challenging problem in the country and successfully tackle it;
  • Give free consultation on mathematical and statistical aspects to other scientists in other institutions, and university and college teachers;
  • Give research-orientation courses for college teachers;
  • Produce excellent PhD's;
  • Produce research publications, monographs etc. and raise the standards of these to the international level;
  • Take up problem-oriented research in the form of project work so that research results in mathematical sciences are brought down to the common man.

Background

After retirement as Professor and Head, Department of Statistics, University of Kerala, Professor Aleyamma George started her work in establishing a research centre in mathematical sciences in Trivandrum. With the help of her friends and well-wishers the Centre for Mathematical Sciences was incorporated in 1977 as a non-profit scientific research and training centre covering all aspects of mathematical sciences, under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII of 1955. Applicants for incorporation were Mr.K.T.Chandy, Dr.A.Abraham, Dr. Jacob Zachariah, Dr. V.l. Subramoniam, Dr.K.Sankara Rao, Dr. Y. Sitaraman and Dr.Aleyamma George.
